Some films deserve more than simply being remembered—they deserve to be preserved.


Shiri (1999) is widely regarded as one of the defining films of modern South Korean cinema, yet despite its importance, it remains surprisingly difficult for audiences outside South Korea to experience through easily accessible, high-quality official releases. While the film is available on South Korean Netflix, that availability is limited by region, leaving many international viewers without a convenient way to discover one of Korean cinema's most influential works.


Unlike most CUTSMITH projects, this is not a reconstruction or saga edition.


This project is dedicated entirely to preservation through restoration.


Project Objectives


- Restore the highest-quality source available while respecting the film's original cinematic appearance.

- Upscale the video with careful attention to preserving natural detail, film texture, and the original visual identity.

- Upgrade and enhance the audio presentation while remaining faithful to the original mix.

- Remove only genuine defects where appropriate without altering the artistic intent.

- Preserve the original pacing, editing, color palette, cinematography, and overall atmosphere.

- Present the film in the best possible quality while maintaining authenticity.


Philosophy


The goal is not to reinvent Shiri.


The goal is to preserve it.


Every restoration decision will prioritize authenticity over artificial enhancement. The intention is to respect the filmmakers' original vision while making the film more enjoyable and accessible for modern audiences.


Why This Project?


Shiri is more than just an action thriller.


It helped redefine the South Korean film industry and remains one of the country's landmark cinematic achievements. A film of this historical importance deserves to be experienced in the highest quality possible by audiences around the world.


This restoration exists to celebrate that legacy and to help preserve one of Korean cinema's greatest masterpieces for future viewers.
